The process of taking a piece of wood and turning it into a serving board, a bowl or a tray begins with the careful selection of wood, looking for special characteristics such as the color and shape of the wood.
I also pay attention to the detail of the wood to highlight and feature the beauty of the wood in the finished product. I source most of my wood from storm-damaged trees, woodpiles, and urban tree removal.
After having a rough design in my head, I remove any excess material and begin rough shaping the design and size. Rough shaping is completed by using various wood cutting hand tools. At this stage, I look for the unique characteristics that will be used as focal points in the shape and size of the product. When satisfied with the “roughed out” shape, the wood will be set aside to allow for a careful drying process to avoid cracking and splitting. Moisture content is monitored during this time. Once dry, the piece will be carved to its final shape and meticulously sanded in preparation for multiple coats of food-safe, natural oil, and wax finish.
The pictures here depict a piece I made from a cherry burl. A burl is a tree growth in which the grain had grown in a deformed manner, often caused by injury, virus, or fungus. A burl is considered ‘prize’ wood due to the twisted, interlocked grain which creates beautiful, rare masterpieces.
